Iris Xiaoyu Liu is a bass trombonist and serves as instructor of low brass at Å·ÖÞ±ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Å·ÖÞ±ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø, where she teaches brass methods, low brass choir, and applied low brass.
Liu's work centers on performance excellence, pedagogy and inclusive representation in classical music. She is currently completing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in trombone performance and pedagogy at the University of Iowa, where she has served as a graduate teaching assistant.
Liu holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing and a Master of Music degree and Performance Diploma from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Trained in both China and the United States, Liu brings a strong cross-cultural perspective to her work as a performer and educator. She is making history as the first female bass trombonist from China to pursue a doctoral degree.
As a performer, Liu has appeared in solo recitals, chamber concerts and orchestral settings across the United States and internationally. She was invited to present a full solo recital in Japan at the International Women¡¯s Brass Conference in Mito City, featuring bass trombone works by female composers, and has performed with ensembles such as the International Women¡¯s Trombone Choir, Iowa Brass Quintet and Orchestra Iowa. Her festival appearances include the International Trombone Festival, Chautauqua School of Music and the Adirondack Performing Arts Fellowship.
Liu is also an active scholar and advocate and strives to inspire the next generation of musicians to see themselves represented on stage and in the field.
