Frieze Lectures: The Year That Rock Island Began

The Frieze Lecture Series is a 19-year partnership between the Rock Island Public Library and Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø. This year's theme is "1841, the Year That Rock Island Began."

Children's show, 'Just A Dream: The Green Play' this weekend

Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø will present a play for children: "Just A Dream: The Green Play," based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2, in the Brunner Theatre Center. Van Allsburg is  best known for "Jumanji" and "The Polar Express."

In a Tuesday presentation to students, the 2002 Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø alumna and Moline native described how hard work and determination led to her ideal job, a production supervisor for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Residential program focuses on student experience

Beginning in the fall of 2016 Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø's residential life program began to focus on the student experience from year to year. The new model  includes ties to courses and activities outside of class.

Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø's 2015 winter-term Symposium Day on the theme of Social Justice will be on Tuesday, January 20. Faculty, guest speakers and students will discuss race, sexual violence, social awareness and reconciliation.

River Readings will continue its seventh season with author Jessica Lamb-Shapiro on Tuesday, January 27 at 7 p.m. in the Wilson Center. Lamb-Shapiro will read from her first book, "Promise Land: My Journey Through America's Self-Help Culture," a tour of the billion-dollar self-help industry that explores American devotion to self-improvement.

Professor of education Chuck Hyser discusses Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø's partnership with Rock Island's Longfellow Elementary School. Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø education students have helped design parts of the Longfellow curriculum, but the college's partnership extends beyond the education department.

John Oostenryk, assistant curator at Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø¡¯s Fryxell Geology Museum, says fossil explorers will find marine and invertebrate fossils in the area from the Sirulian and Devonian geologic periods and also plant fossils, although they are more frail.

Spring 2015 Academic All Americans

The Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Vikings had three seniors repeat as Academic All-America selections. On Tuesday, the Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Sports Information Directors of America released the list of spring Academic All-America honorees. Runners David Devore and Becca Sund were on it for the second straight year, while David Voland landed a spot on the   list for a third straight year.

Learning communities

What are called "learning communities" have been around awhile. They typically involve combining two or more courses in different academic disciplines to approach topics in new ways. Taking these student communities abroad adds an extra dimension.

Retiring faculty

Four retiring professors and a coach were recognized for their years of service and invaluable contributions to students and the college at Å·ÖÞ±­ÍøÍ¶_Å·ÖÞ±­ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø's 155th commencement ceremony.
