Artist statement

From a young age, the natural world has always inspired me. Growing up, I spent much of my childhood outdoors in the woods near my home, where I developed a deep appreciation for the environment and the lush wildlife it holds. That early connection continues to influence the art I create today.

Karolina Rapa

Karolina Rapa is a senior from Orland Park, Ill., majoring in art and graphic design and minoring in communication studies.

My goal for this project was to show my appreciation for nature through my work. I convey that by how rich and full each environment is of life. My original plan was to primarily work with acrylic paint on canvas. I wanted a vibrant and colorful work with lightweight lines to emphasize movement as well as the ambient atmosphere. My artwork focuses on character design and the exploration of biomes and habitats. I am fascinated by the ways environment and identity connect, and my work aims to bring that connection to life. Each piece features fantastical characters whose forms and personalities are shaped by the worlds they inhabit. These characters are accompanied by the animals that define their ecosystems, allowing the environment itself to become part of the story.
