The performance was an exploration of three musical treatments of fate, including Verdi's dramatic overture to the opera "La Forza del Destino," Tchaikovsky's romantic depiction of Shakespeare's ill-fated lovers in his "Romeo and Juliet" overture, and Beethoven's groundbreaking Symphony No. 5.

Paige Phelps, a communication studies major from Sycamore, Ill., graduated magna cum laude in 2017.

Caitlin Thom is a music composition and instrumental performance major from Bettendorf, Iowa.

Abigail Smith is a music major from Peru, Ill.
