Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø students moving out and doing good

Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø students will move out of residence halls Thursday through Saturday, May 23-25. The college will partner with local organizations to donate gently used items to the community.

Two Salvation Army collection trucks will be on campus during move-out, with one in O Lot near 38th Street between Swanson Commons and Andreen Hall and one in K Lot near 30th Street and Westerlin Residence Center. Director of Residential Life Chris Beyer said accepted donations will include furniture, rugs, small appliances and other items.

¡°This partnership with The Salvation Army to save items from going to landfills and to get donated items to those who need them is a great opportunity and is an easy win for doing good for our community,¡± he said.

Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø students may also donate clothing items during move-out to Closet2Closet, a local nonprofit that distributes clothing to youth in foster care. The organization was founded 10 years ago by Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø professor Dr. Allison Haskill, Communication Sciences and Disorders Department co-chair and Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program director.

¡°We at Closet2Closet have appreciated receiving donations following the Augie spring move-out the past two years,¡± Dr. Haskill said. ¡°Many of our clients are young adults, and they truly appreciate receiving donations from similarly aged peers.¡±

The donation drives align with the ¡°connect through partnership¡± goal of the college¡¯s strategic plan, Bold & Boundless. The college is committed to working with Rock Island through a number of initiatives to contribute to neighborhood vitality, enhance neighborhoods around campus and serve as an engaged presence in the region.
