Representing Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø at the ASIANetwork conference was an unforgettable experience. I connected with scholars, peers and fellow students about the interdisciplinary conversations surrounding Asia. Thanks to the support of the Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø community, I was able to fully engage in sessions that bridged business, religion, ecology, education, science and activism, all hosted by Trinity University with a focus on Asia¡¯s global connections.

One step towards my career goals

My presentation explored how TikTok food influencers are shaping consumer behavior among Vietnamese Generation Z and how the trend is transforming the operations of street vendors and restaurants in Vietnam. As a double major in communication studies and international business ¨C marketing at Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø, my research aligns closely with both my academic interests and future career goals.

The interdisciplinary nature of this research required me to apply a range of skills and knowledge from both of my majors. For example, when designing a questionnaire to collect primary data, I drew on media theories from my communication studies courses to explore how digital content can influence the consumption habits of the younger consumers.

In my marketing courses, I learned the importance of understanding local consumer preferences to develop targeted strategies. This principle guided my research objective: to provide practical recommendations for food businesses in Vietnam on how to effectively utilize influencer marketing.

This project reflects the kind of work I hope to pursue in the future ¡ª conducting research, using diverse methods to collect and analyze data, creating visualizations to share insights and helping businesses grow through strategic decision-making.

Taking advantage of networking opportunities

Attending the conference was not only an academic milestone but also a valuable personal and professional experience. One of the most memorable aspects was the opportunity to network and build connections.

Before the trip, I hadn¡¯t met the other Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø students attending, but once we arrived, we quickly bonded. We explored San Antonio together, researched popular local spots and restaurants, and shared stories about our diverse backgrounds.

During the poster presentation session, I heard comments like ¡°Oh, that¡¯s so interesting¡± or ¡°I was looking forward to seeing your presentation after reading your abstract¡± from professionals and fellow students. That kind of feedback was motivating and affirming.

I also had the opportunity to talk with professors from various colleges, who shared their experiences and challenges in developing Asian studies courses at their institutions. These discussions made me more appreciative of the opportunities Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø offers, especially in fostering diverse academic exploration.

Strengthening my relationship with Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø faculty

A key highlight of this experience was the chance to strengthen my connection with my academic advisor, Dr. Ann Ericson. She not only guided me throughout the entire research process but also provided invaluable support and insight.

When I agreed to participate in this annual conference, Dr. Ericson shared valuable resources from Å·ÖÞ±ÍøͶ_Å·ÖÞ±ÍâΧapp-Ͷע¹ÙÍø alumni to help me better understand what was expected and how to approach my project.

From crafting the abstract to preparing the final poster presentation, she guided me step-by-step, helping me develop a more structured and coherent research plan. Dr. Ericson¡¯s experience in international marketing research methods was incredibly helpful. Her practical advice and experience helped me navigate this complex process with more confidence.

Beyond the academic collaboration, this trip allowed Dr. Ericson and I to travel together and support each other outside the classroom. It helped us bond in a way that felt more like family than just student and professor. We shared stories, looked out for each other and created memories that I¡¯ll carry with me long after the project is over.

I¡¯m truly grateful for the opportunity to work so closely with a professor who genuinely cares about both her students¡¯ academic success and their personal growth.
